Lead-based paint can pose serious health risks, especially to young children. When the paint deteriorates, it forms lead dust and chips, which, when ingested or inhaled, can lead to lead poisoning. This can result in developmental delays, learning disabilities, and behavioral issues. Additionally, adults exposed to lead may experience high blood pressure and fertility issues. Additionally, workers that disturb paint with detectable levels of lead must be protected in accordance with OSHA requirements.
Removing or encapsulating lead-based paint is crucial for preventing these health hazards. Lead paint can be addressed by removing the entire component (window sill, baseboard, etc.), encapsulating the paint, or stripping the paint via EPA recommended methods. Typically, one of the first two methods is recommended as the most cost effective options.
